The Representation of Gender and Region

The Representation of Gender and Region Essay

The representation of gender and region in Gavin and Stacey Series 1 Episode 1 is shown representing Gavin's Home in Essex and Stacey's home in Barry stereotypically. They also show Gavin and Stacey themselves stereotypically.

Stacey's home in Barry is seen as a small, cramped dimly lit house filled with old-fashioned furniture suggest that she comes from a poor, lower class background. The fact that her house is small is shown in the shot where the camera can see all walls of the main room without moving it. Stacey's workplace also seems old with the exception of a few computers. Also the colour of the workplace is the same colour as her shirt suggesting she feels home there.

Gavin's workplace is also the same colour as his shirt suggesting he feels home there as well. It is much more modern that Stacey's workplace suggesting Essex is richer than Barry. Gavin's home is big and spacious which shown when the camera must move to track Gavin's movements. It is also filled with more modern equipment giving it a richer look than Barry.

The representation of gender and region is shown to make comparisons between Gavin and Stacey and their homes in Essex and Barry
